Aznan Omar

Malaysia

Aznan Omar (B.1973) was born in Alor Setar, Kedah. He gained his diploma and degree in Fine Art from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam in 1996 and 2000 respectively, where he benefited from the tutelage of artists like Zulkifli Yusoff and Ramlan Abdullah. Aznan went on to obtain his Masters degree in Art as Environment from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK in 2008.

The artist has participated in numerous group exhibitions since the early nineties. In 1997, he was part of a small project group of Malaysian artists including Tengku Sabri Tengku Ibrahim and Zulkifli Yusoff who showcased their works in Kassel, Germany. And in the new millennia, Aznan went on to take part in important local competitions like the Philip Morris Art Awards (2000 and 2003) and the Young Contemporaries Award organized by the National Art Gallery (2000 and 2004).

In 2009, Aznan’s works were exhibited prominently around Malaysia’s capital and he was part of exhibitions like The Beauty of Malay Intellect at the National Art Gallery, Point Blank at House of MATAHATI (HOM), Ilham 3: Sculpture Show at Pelita Hati House of Art, and Virus at NN Gallery.

Last year, Aznan’s work was shown at the 14th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh and the artist was also in the running for the newly revived Young Contemporary Award at the National Art Gallery. Aznan also had work featured in a show featuring young Malaysian artists called New Object(ion) at Galeri Petronas and he also found time to be part of TAKSU’s annual Locals Only exhibition.

His public sculpture One Drop (2000) emerged as the winning work in a public sculpture competition hosted by the National Art Gallery and Aznan also has other accolades to his name, such as the Juror’s Award at the Young Contemporary Award in 2000 and 2004 and an Honourable Mention at the Philip Morris Art Awards in 2003.

Aznan balances his fine art practice with his role as an arts educator UiTM’s Seri Iskandar campus in Perak. And, he remains one of the longest-serving staff members at that campus’s Faculty of Art and Design, which was established in 1996.
