Chiew Sien Kuan

Chiew Sien Kuan graduated from NAFA in 1989 majoring in paintin, and obtained both his Bachelor of Fine Art and Master of Fine Art at the University of Tasmania. He is actively involved in group exhibitions, such as the recent EXCAVATION – Ten Singapore Artists at the Art Studio @ Old School and Warm Machines, Esplanade Concourse Space, 2009.

His artistic investigation is focused on aesthetics and conceptual movements of mobile machines in modern cities. The recollection of precedent aesthetics with present found materials such as raw wood, machine parts, found objects and raw metal provides a new platform in rethinking object-making as art. Sien Kuan’s painting and sculpture - ‘Movement in the City’ attempts to construct, to label and to depict the ‘multi-centre’ viewpoints of spatial perspective, into the form of a recognizable machine – a car, It is a metaphor of our social system of motion, a form of creation enabling us to conceal within the car – a ‘box’ as a moving force for mobility and freedom.

In 1992, he was awarded the Highly Recommended Prize in the Australian Bicentennial Art Award of Young Artists. The following year, he attained First prize in the 3D category at the Phillippe Charriol Foundation Contemporary Art Competition
