Exhibiting Artists: Max Balatbat

Venue: ION Art Gallery > venue details

Dates: 13 Oct 2011 - 23 Oct 2011

Attuned to the ironies of survival amidst urban decay, Max Balatbat interpretes the abstract architectural configuration and pervasive sense of squalor of Kabaret Internasyonal, an infamous palace of nightlife in Caloocan with its dance halls, seedy bars and ladies of the evening.

***

Experiencing Max Balatbat’s art is embracing geometry, lyricism and disarray. He rebuilds sites in a sort of poetic clutter as his way of coming up with the most sensory ways of presenting his subjects. His images may cause audiences to get lost in the copious load of incongruous patterns and zones of disorder until they are brought into fine, cozy details which lead to clues, cadences, rhymes and even reason. Remarkably, however, his production tends to be fuller, larger as well as more monochromatic, but also liberally oscillate between a range of colors complementing the mix of patterns.

Always, Balatbat’s immediate presence in canvas is emotional, direct and personally spontaneous. His maps/abstractions of sites evoke his sense of groundedness and belonging to these places.
