Exhibiting Artists: Andre Tan
Venue: F1 Pit Building > venue details
Dates: 17 Nov 2011 - 20 Nov 2011
For his fourth solo outing, Andre Tan creates a fresh visual vocabulary for Singaporean pop art, pairing images of the inhabitants of old Singapore with images of the popular culture of today. His anachronistic anomalies often thrust an item of unimagined luxury onto an unsuspecting coolie or samsui woman, wrenching them into our modern-day consumerist culture with its concomitant absurdities. The unexpected juxtapositions might invoke a fleeting reflection on our bizarre obsessions with goods of desire, which would then dissolve readily into laughter and simple merriment.
Andre Tan obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from the LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore (2000), his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art with 1st Class Honors from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (2004) and returned to LASALLE for his Master of Arts in Fine Arts (2006). Andre is the recipient of the Judge’s Choice for UTGP08-Kenichiro Mogi Prize (2008, Japan), Studentship Scheme (2005) in LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, and also the Georgette Chen Arts Schola
