Walkways Into Memory

Exhibiting Artists: Tan Ai Ngin

Venue: Utterly Art 229A South Bridge Road > venue details

Dates: 05 Jan 2012 - 15 Jan 2012

The five foot way is very much an iconic feature of our tropical Straits Chinese shophouses, where an overhanging upper floor shields the ground floor from rain and sunshine, allowing a protected pedestrian pathway where one can amble at leisure, or even shop and eat in the busier commercial districts. To local artist Tan Ai Ngin, they are oases of reflective nostalgia, especially in the historic residential precincts of Emerald Hill and Blair Road where she has largely based this series of architectural portraits.

Adopting the view of a traveller walking along the sheltered corridors, rather than the frontal shophouse views depicted by several other local artists, her works take on additional depth and perspective, while her plein air execution explains the deft, efficient brushwork which faithfully records old-fashioned windows and doors, antique lamps and tilework, and a profusion of greenery in pots that substitute for an actual garden courtyard. Her paintings record glimpses of a previous existence in these old housing estates, which draw you seductively into her walkways of memory.
