Tale of the Red Merlions

Exhibiting Artists: Frank Zhen

Venue: ION Art Gallery > venue details

Dates: 18 Jan 2012 - 30 Jan 2012

Art has always been my passion since childhood, but family finances had dictated that it was not practical as a career. A personal crisis in 2005 brought me back to painting for solace, and I took up a few short courses, mostly in oil painting.

My passion for Chinese culture and language has been growing steadily over the years. I have high regards for fellow Indian and Malay Singaporeans who have a firm grip on their own origins and mother-tongue, but sadly many Singaporean Chinese do not embrace their own roots. Whether our forefathers came from Fujian, Guangzhou, Chaozhou etc., knowing and understanding one's origin will give us strength in meeting challenges.

My Red Merlions series (started 2009) was inspired by ESM Goh Chok Tong, who on several occasions had called for Singaporeans to "ride on the tide of China's economic growth". The young and resilient merlions with cheery and alert dispositions are undaunted by choppy waters, and stay together to face the challenges.

I like Chinese paper cuts for their innocence and unpretentious qualities. Paper cuts reveal the hopes and aspirations of their creator, with festive and cheerful qualities. I frequently use the auspicious numbers 8, 9 and 18, and auspicious symbols such as peaches signifying Longevity, and bats which sound like Luck in Chinese. My paintings can be broadly divided into those based on traditional paper-cut motifs in red and white, and those which use 5 colours representing the 5 races in Singapore (Yellow=Chinese, Blue=Indians, Green=Malays, Pink=Peranakans, Purple=Eurasians).

  • Frank Zhen

Art has been a passion for Frank Zhen since his youth, who would as a child spend hours drawing on paper. In the past few years, he has experienced an intense urge to paint to express his feelings, and has undertaken a number of short courses in painting from 2006 to 2011. His first solo exhibition Tales of the Red Merlion met with good media attention and commercial success.
