Balanghai Ground Zero

Exhibiting Artists: John Paul Antido

Venue: Utterly Art 20B Mosque Street > venue details

Dates: 06 Sep 2012 - 16 Sep 2012

Balanghai refers to the large boat used by early settlers of the Philippines, a vessel that can carry a small clan or a large family. It is also the root word of the word barangay which means a small community, village or neighborhood. From here, in characteristically rich-hued and rough-textured paintings, Filipino John Paul Antido shows his native community fanning out in search of greener pastures amidst turbulent waters beset by assorted sea monsters.

The Philippine diaspora, baggage and all, is documented in a series of fond archetypes. We see the dalagang bukid, the farm maiden who leaves her native province, and the marino, her lover who is willing to swim the deepest seas to seek her out. The troubadour who sings despite all calamities, while the pretty May flower is resplendent in her gown. The Overseas Filipino Worker who navigates troubled seas in search of home, while the protective mother chaperones her inakay (hatchling). Larger paintings contain more pithy observations: teamwork in a dragonboat propels one forward; the women on the banana boat hope for the best but expect the worst; lovers hold hands to ride out the storm; the girl on the jetski rushes along with domestic and cultural origins scattered helter-skelter.

Using his fellow countrymen and their plight as ground zero for a rich source of inspiration, John Paul Antido shows the Filipino seeking destinations, moving forward, spreading cultures, in search of better and beyond.
