Crisis Management

Exhibiting Artists: Melvin Culaba

Venue: Utterly Art 229A South Bridge Road > venue details

Dates: 14 Oct 2010 - 24 Oct 2010

Crisis takes on many forms - it can be financial, personal, or even an imaginary one, formed in the mind of an insane person. Filipino artist, Melvin Culaba, chose the title Crisis Management for the show in the aftermath of the global financial crisis (or is it still ongoing?), and the infamous hostage-taking that happened in Manila recently. The show is about how people cope and survive in the midst of a crisis.

Filipinos usually try to play down crisis situations - they crack jokes and laugh at their problems, just like in Jejemon Kid Enjoying The Taste Of Cherries. People also resolve the problems they face through their own choices and ingenuity, even if their chosen action is illegal, just to earn money even if it is through illicit means e.g. 3-D Home Theater. Nevetheless, the artist still hopes for the best resolution of the situation e.g. Looking Forward (the character is in a yellow dress, which is the colour of the current Philippine President, whom Filipinos look to to redeem them from poverty and hardship). He also hopes that Filipinos will learn to obey basic rules and laws, just like citizens of progressive countries e.g Grade 3, Section Honesty (a law prohibits smoking in public transportation, but the driver is the first to break this rule).

Ever the acute observer, Melvin takes a broad look across the foibles of society to examine how the individual Filipino overcomes crisis in his or her own idiosyncratic way.
