Exhibition

Anak Peranakan

Exhibiting Artists: Desmond Sim

Venue: Utterly Art 229A South Bridge Road > venue details

Dates: 29 Sep 2010 - 10 Oct 2010

Funny. Mischievous. Quiet. Silly. Happy. Expressive. Sad. Desmond Sim’s gang of little nyonyas and babas will charm and captivate your hearts with scenes of a childhood forgotten. Whether you are 6 or 60, you will love and remember your carefree days. And especially for us who have left that child in us behind in our hurry to grow up, it is time again to reacquaint ourselves with the lovely and happy memories of our childhood.

Desmond paints his Peranakan children the way all proud Mamas and Papas want to see their kids: cherub-cheeked, well-fed and happy. Whether they are dressing up the cat, or run to you crying with duck poop on their head (how in the world did they manage that?!), you have no choice but to love them, pinch them on  their cheeks (or spank their naughty bottoms) and send them back to the playground laughing!

Artist

  • Desmond Sim

    Singapore

In the Peranakan-styled art that he is now best known for, Desmond is totally self-taught, although a strong influence from Modigliani, Rousseau, de Lempicka and Art Deco is prevalent. He paints for the sheer pleasure of the colours… and for the sheer freedom offered by pristine canvases. While his day job has totally to do with words, his passion for painting totally takes up the other side of his brain in his free time.
