Exhibiting Artists: Zulkifli Yusoff

Venue: Utterly Art 229A South Bridge Road > venue details

Dates: 16 Sep 2010 - 26 Sep 2010

Zulkifli Yusoff issues a clarion call for the Harmony that was prevalent in the post-Independence euphoria of Malaysia, in all its idealistic fervour and patriotism. The culmination of a historical trilogy that began with Malay Sketches (2008) and Malaya (2009), Harmony follows immediately from Negaraku, his major and ongoing exposition at Malaysia's National Art Gallery, the Balai Seni Lukis Negara.

The Negaraku series stems from Zulkifli's experiences and nostalgia for the past, as well as his awe for the potential of the present. Held in conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia's 53rd year of independence on 31st August 2010, and the 1st Malaysia Day on 16th September 2010, Negaraku and Harmony draw from an aspiration for racial unity and nation then, as in now, with Dato' Sri Najib Tun Razak's 1Malayisa campaign. Zulkifli draws on icons of the post-Independence era, like the bunga raya or hibiscus, Malaysia's national flower, the barbershop pole with images of old-fashioned hairstyles, and hippie-style peace symbols to populate his canvases. He remembers government dissemination of agricultural knowledge through radio and broadcast vans to motivate the populace to take part in the agricultural sector for the sake of their families' and the Nation's economies. This potent brew erupts in a dense juxtapositioning of images using screenprint, painting and new canvas collage techniques to realize the artist's vision of unity and peace.

Artist

  • Zulkifli Yusoff

    Malaysia

Malaysia’s sole representative to the Venice Biennale in 1997, Zulkifli Yusoff (b. 1962 Yan, Kedah) might be styled as the enfant terrible of Malysian art, with his candid assessments of Malay society and his unorthodox, innovative presentations. One of the first Malaysian artists to investigate installations and digital prints, Zulkifli has also made tin sculptures as well as ceramic paintings and sculptures.
