Dialogue Amongst Trees

Exhibiting Artists: Lynn Lim Li Yin, Terence Tan Chee Wah

Venue: Utterly Art 20B Mosque Street > venue details

Dates: 29 Aug 2013 - 08 Sep 2013

Dialogue Amongst Trees is a collaborative showcase by two Singaporean visual artists, Terence Tan Chee Wah and Lynn Lim Li Yin, to record their personal expressions of trees in nature. Terence paints with Chinese ink on rice paper and Lynn creates mixed media works on paper and silkscreen on textiles.

While trees with their unique shapes representing some of nature’s most engaging forms fill their works, Terence and Lynn see them in different ways. Terence paints trees luscious with leaves; Lynn inclines towards ones that are bare, almost stripped of their bark and variously textured. They however share their reverence for space and the feeling it can instill in viewers.

“My painting is not a reproduction of reality. It is the essence of my engagement with reality through my senses.” - Terence

Terence's series of paintings re-examines the relationship between man and nature. The ideas behind the works go beyond the existing issues of environmental destruction to concern more moral and ethical aspects of mankind. The unmanageable chaos in this present world is broadly due to disasters brought about by humans. The paintings lead the viewers back to the origin, where humans are in harmony with nature.

“I am most inspired by the emotional experience as I create my work, and the sublime feeling that resonates within me and the viewers, the work having its own soul.” - Lynn

In her paintings, Lynn observes the way that every tree or flower transforms and goes through its existence uninhibitedly, embracing this unimpeded process with much grace and exuberance.
