My Story IV - An Artist's Allegories

Exhibiting Artists: Wong Shih Yaw

Venue: Utterly Art 20B Mosque Street > venue details

Dates: 22 Oct 2013 - 03 Nov 2013

Wong Shih Yaw’s latest incarnation of his long-running autobiographical series, My Story IV - An Artist's Allegories, continues to feature fantastical mechanoid creations as symbolic representations of facets of the artist’s character, frailties and tribulations. Drawing largely on animal-machine hybrids this round, scenarios reflecting specific animalistic traits are used as allegories of the artist’s situation, particularly where it reflects his engagement with his Christian faith.

The horse may represent the over-emphasis on self-effort with its ultimate futility, as a reflection of the lack of trust in God to provide all one needs.  On the other hand, the bee and ant are appreciated for their industrious quality to faithfully deliver what is designed for one’s unique being.  Modules falling off the centipede reference the inevitability of aging, while the parable of the blind men encountering an elephant illustrates how easily the artist can be misunderstood. His ingenious visual metaphors sit on a patterned background with elements drawn from the main narrative. A key member of Singapore’s seminal Artists Village movement, Shih Yaw continues his individualistic practice with visual brainstorms deriving from his own fertile imagination.
