COMIC reLEAF

Exhibiting Artists: Ronald Caringal

Venue: Utterly Art 20B Mosque Street > venue details

Dates: 07 Nov 2013 - 17 Nov 2013

Comic ReLeaf works as a visual autobiography of Philippine artist Ronald Caringal who likens viewing the show to leafing through pages of his life portrayed from a comical point of view. Returning to his comic/cartoon roots, the exhibition allows the artist to present very personal situations in a pronounced humorous way, showing how life can be action-packed and full of adventure despite sometimes gloomy or harsh story lines. As he quips, “I feel like surviving life itself makes one his or her own superhero.”

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
People have different means of dealing with situations that befall them. Tough or not, our lives are filled with pages and pages of stories, both good and bad that we compile and keep safely stored in our hearts and minds. We open this book from time to time and relive the good times and try our best to find humor in the bad. Most times, even when looking back, we can't believe some of the things that happened to us. All we can do is let out a good laugh. This show is about those troubled and difficult moments in my life.

With this show I am presenting very personal situations in a pronounced humorous way. My life, like everybody else's, is action-packed and rich in adventure despite having its share of gloomy and sometimes even harsh story lines.

I believe each can be his or her own super hero. We are all protagonists in our own little plots. We have the uncanny and amazing ability to survive and surprise not only ourselves but the world that surrounds us by taking all the hits Life gives us and still have the the strength to fight back. In this story, we can slay monsters that chase us, take hits no other mortal can, lift the heaviest of burdens and reach heights unheard of. One thing I learned, is that in the hardest of situations, we can always give ourselves a chance to become our own saviors. Like how heroes find their superpowers in times of desperation. We write the stories that make up our lives. We outline and color each page. We compile them in our hearts and minds. Then someday, we can relive the pages.
