Dates: 20 Nov 2008 - 30 Nov 2008

From 20th to 30th November 2008, Singapore-based artist from China, Lu Yifei, will be holding his first solo exhibition in Utterly Art.

The common thread running through the works is Yifei's childhood fantasy world. He combines personalised sentiments about life with cartoon symbolism to present Astro Boy and Super Mario on his canvases as cartoon heroes in spirit. These icons used to bring the artist wonderful visual experiences and feelings. They represent different levels of mental attachments to heroes, the artist's nostalgia for childhood memories, as well as the non-negligible collective memories his generation has of growing up.

As the artist matured constantly, his experience and feelings grew richer by the day. He began to look for a visual image that could express his inner sentiments, and bear his imagination and all that he would infuse it with. Thus the boy figure gradually took shape. From here on, the artist also began to focus on portraying new experiences of self-consciousness. Roving in his fantastical inner world, one might suddenly realise that the cartoon figures are also the products of an ordinary, lonely boy's imagination.

Presently, China of the open-door era is flooded with diverse values. Co-mingling with the mainstream consciousness passed down from Mao Zedong's time, they nurtured, influenced and shaped Yifei's generation. He and his peers have to deal with social realities falling short of idealism, but theirs is a personality cast in strong relief, in which collective values and a spirit of individual independence coexist. As ideals and faith shift quietly, these people are immersed in a fabulous world put together anew by their own self-consciousness.
