Exhibition

Tamae and Guan

Exhibiting Artists: Oh Thiam Guan, Tamae Iwasaki

Venue: Utterly Art 229A South Bridge Road > venue details

Dates: 19 Aug 2010 - 29 Aug 2010

Working in subdued hues of black, white and grey, Oh Thiam Guan and Tamae Iwasaki nevertheless present works of startling presence and dramatic flair in their first eponymous exhibition together. With such monochromaticity, the viewer is driven to focus on the meanings of the images and savour the depth of tonality in the works, which were inspired by everyday relationships encountered by the artists.

Guan’s works represent emotions and situations faced habitually, but which are buried deep in his subconscious. They surface as elaborate narratives, using the rabbit as an alter-ego, musing on mortality with wit and panache. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2001, Guan currently works at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute and has participated in several local group shows.

Tamae creates her own portrait as a very plain, unadorned figure with no sense of sex or character, but subsequently overlays elements like veils or lace to create a startlingly different persona. A graduate of the Tokyo Zokei University in 1998 with a licence in teaching profession of art, Tamae has held 3 solo shows in Tokyo, and participated in several group shows in Japan and Singapore. Tamae is also a printer at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute where she works with Guan.
