BOOM! is a series of paintings on urban/modern disasters such as motorcar accidents, plane crashes, collapsed buildings and bridges. In these paintings, the act of painting is a performative one – a process which is intensive, spontaneous, precarious and re-active; one that is more destructive than constructive. Here the paints are applied freely, smudged, smeared, scrubbed, scrabbled and scratched: the brushstrokes are gestural and chaotic. For the artist, a painting is often only “activated” after it has been subjected to a series of destructive treatments and pushed almost to the verge of failing: the painting then comes ‘alive’.
