A recent development in Indonesian art has been the emergence of young artists concerned not so much with social, political or satirical messages, but who produce work imbued thoroughly with the spirit of fun and play. They indulge childhood dreams, belong to a rabid comic and cartoon fandom, and seek only to delight themselves and their viewers in cheery, whimsical and engaging expressions. Creating in graphic, street or illustrative styles which borrow from manga or anime, the artists entice you to regress to a candy-coloured universe full of fantasy and wonder.

Fadjar Djunaedi’s (b. 1970, Batu, Malang, East Java) forboding forests with distinctive multi-layered backgrounds are normally filled with quirky animals but this time, a funky elephant-zebra cross dominates. Graduating from IKIP Malang in 1994, he was nominated for the Jakarta Art Awards in 2006. This is his first outing in Singapore.

Hendra ‘HeHe’ Harsono (b. 1983 Kediri, Central Java) invites you to escape into a lightly-modelled world populated with colourful geometric creatures who betray their sentience with blinking eyes. Exhibiting extensively in Indonesia and Malaysia, HeHe appears for the first time in Singapore. His work has featured in Sotheby’s auctions in Hong Kong.

Yoga Mahendra’s (b. 1982, Malang, East Java) dense imagery of creatures and creations are now applied to decorate the letters in the word ‘AQUA’. A Design Communication and Visual Arts Major in IKIP, he has been an active participant in the art community ‘PORTAL’ and is appearing in Singapore for the first time.
