Dates: 27 Aug 2009 - 06 Sep 2009

As a migrant artist from Shenyang in Liaoning Province, China, but having studied and spent formative years in Singapore, Chang Jinchao experiences the ennui that comes from having a mixed or dual identity, but a rootedness to neither. Life in a small community of family and friends means an inevitable sharing of a common ‘mentality’ or ‘world view’ in language, habits, culture, and this is manifested in his paintings as the inter-connections between the sinuous, shadowy denizens that populate his fantastical world. But introduction of the ‘other’ changes the dynamics, and we see the figures swirl as they interact - reaching out, reacting, avoiding, forming new links as they encounter each other.

For the artist straddling this world and the other, he is a vagrant with no home. He exists between two spaces and cannot find a resolution for his nagging emptiness. It is as if the cap on a container has been removed, and the evaporated water will not return.
