There is a void. The void is beyond loneliness and boredom, and is a sort of "nothingness" which is not possible to solve. The void cannot be filled and will be wider if filled temporarily. The void is part of the inner heart of Shengyang artist Chang Jinchao, and drawing is his way of exposing those pessimistic lonely hearts in society. Finding a kindred spirit in the writings of Haruki Murakami, Jinchao makes a distinction between this fabricated world of reality, and another secret world of the unknown. We resist "the other world" because we do not want to leave reality; we seek "the other world" because we want to be with the void. Drawing is a sort of language; writing memory through drawing is an exit; Jinchao uses it to resist the void he has to face.

Jinchao populates his drawings with various alter-egos from his Theatre of the Absurd. They are roles searching for a writer. His previously depressive monochromatic figures are now broken, and reveal familiar characters in new colours which evoke new emotions. It is his way of sustaining interest in drawing as an exit. Everything will disappear if he stops drawing.”
