A Place Named Foreign Country

Exhibiting Artists: Chang Jinchao

Venue: Utterly Art 229A South Bridge Road > venue details

Dates: 20 Jul 2006 - 30 Jul 2006

Chang Jinchao's art plays like a miniature theatre of the absurd, with himself as the retiring curly-haired protagonist set in a surreal mise-en-scène. A native of Shenyang in Liaoning province, Jinchao was plunged into a vastly unfamiliar environment when he came to Singapore to study, and his art subconsciously reflects the doubt and uncertainty over the tentative choices he has made for his art. The protagonist hides in a hat in miniature silver sculptures, then emerges as a distant, bowed figure in a number of silkscreen prints. It is in his drawings on canvas that his subjects erupt with shy exuberance. The protagonist may be in a suit, but a brash panda alter-ego takes centrestage amidst abundant quantities of hair, and a supporting cast of rabbits, giraffes and monsters. Ultimately the foreign country is not really Singapore, it is that secret place in our hearts that we may desire, but dare not venture except in our fantasies.
