Face Without Name

Exhibiting Artists: Bayu Utomo Radjikin

Venue: The Substation Gallery > venue details

Dates: 03 Jun 2011 - 19 Jun 2011

Face Without Name refers to the anonymous figures in the artist’s large and imposing portraits in charcoal and paint. Once again, Bayu Utomo Radjikin features his signature male figures dressed as Malay warriors, but with the addition of new figures wearing fighter pilot helmets.

The latter may be seen as a deviation from the artist’s usual cast of characters, but it actually represents old pastures. Early in his career – now past the two-decade mark – Bayu often addressed sociopolitical themes in his artworks, portraying figures in fragile situations and highlighting the atrocities of war.

Today, these issues are addressed in a different way. The artist uses fighter pilot helmets as a way to cloak identity, suggesting that these figures could be anyone at all – a child, an old woman, Bayu himself, or you and I – and how individuals, especially soldiers, have become pawns in war, obeying orders without questioning, and turning more and more into faceless beings.

Face Without Name is about identity and Bayu’s humanistic view will probe audiences to think about oppositions, cultural and social identities, and what it means to be human today. And, as always, the artist puts these questions forward in stunning works that showcase his mastery of realism, the figure, and his keen attention to detail.
